We have previously discussed that SecureIt Gun Storage had launched a one-of-a-kind firearm curriculum that is all about home defense training, your mindset, and working with your gun safe. Why is this important?… It is the elephant in the room for all gun owners. You own firearms for defense against nefarious attackers and intruders. You store them in a gun safe so the firearms are safe while not in use. So, how do you bridge that gap from static storage to dynamic deployment? Like anything, you need to come up with a plan and train. That is exactly what SecureIt Gun Storage has done for all of us in their “Beyond the Gun” Safe Training curriculum. For those who may have missed our initial coverage, let’s take a look at what that is all about.

Introducing the SecureIt “Beyond the Gun” Safe Training
As mentioned above, SecureIt’s “Beyond the Gun” Safe Training bridges the gap of retrieving your firearm in a home defense situation. Moreover, their training discusses many elements that we do not talk about. It is in this minutia of details that can make all of the difference in your success of defending yourself at home.
- Where to Store Guns in your Home
- How to Customize the Inside of your Safe to Meet Specific Needs
- Real-World Scenario Training
How many people have actually thought about how staging our firearms inside of our safes can help in their deployment in a time of need? Probably none of us. We simply cram as many firearms inside a safe as long as the door still shuts. That is why we need to be mindful of how we do things and SecureIt helps shed light on that.
“Beyond the Gun” Safe Training | The Goal of Training with Your Gun Safe
Many people spend a lifetime training and becoming proficient with their firearms. This is good! We should all aspire to do so. What also must be considered though is deploying your firearm. Just as we are taught to clear a garment to present a handgun from concealment, so, too, must we know how to access a gun safe, lock box, or other safe storage device when under duress, stressed, and pressured to defend ourselves. Both skills are valuable and both must be trained.
We all know the importance of training with your gun on a regular basis so you know exactly how to use it, and you’re comfortable doing so, should an emergency arise. The same must be said for training with your gun safe. – Tom Kubiniec, President & Chief Executive Officer
“Beyond the Gun” Safe Training | How Often You Should Train with Your Safe
A common question that gun owners ask themselves is: “How often should you train?” Knowing that firearm skills are perishable (they need to be constantly honed); otherwise, that sharp edge shooting prowess is lost is important. Likewise, you should train with your safe. We aren’t talking putting a headband on, some leg warmers, and prepare yourself for a workout. Simply, train.
Psychologists have identified that if you want to make something a routine (an unconscious part of your day whether motivation exists or not) you need 35 days of consistency to do so. Moreover, if you do something as little as 3 – 5 minutes a day, it can make you proficient (if not a master), in no time. As Tom alludes to in the video below, simply start training and you’ll begin to stack muscle memory and become better deploying your firearm from a safe.
Again, the goal of SecureIt Gun Storage is to make all safe and firearm owners more proficient, confident, and capable with the tools and storage they use to defend themselves. This starts at the moment you hear a Boom! or Crash! in your home, your adrenaline is immediately spiked, and you have to spring into action. In those hair-raising moments, you might be surprised or startled, but you don’t want to be scared – and you won’t be – if you take the time to practice and become proficient with your safe setup.
We mentioned that staging your firearms – their orientation, presentation, and ease of access inside your safe – all matter when retrieving a firearm. If your at-home safe setup needs some sprucing up, feel free to browse the SecureIt website as they offer a bevy of accessories and modifications to make your safe perfect for you. As always, let us know all of your thoughts in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback, and will be sharing more content surrounding this exact type of training in the very near future.
